Conversation in a Christian Book Store
"This blanket is so beautiful," said the clerk, checking out our large pile of blankets placed in front of her on the sales counter.
"Yes, every Dog we rescue gets their own special blanket," I replied.
"For Dogs?" questioned the elderly volunteer as she carefully stuffed each fuzzy blanket into large plastic bags.
"Yes, we've rescued over 2400 Dogs and they all get their own special blanket to take along with them as they go to their new and forever homes."
"But they are all such fancy, nice blankets," was her queried reply.
"Well, as far as we are concerned, Dogs are just the same as you and I, therefore nothing is too good for them. I believe they have souls just like you and I do."
"Nonsense, only humans have souls," retorted the elderly, single-minded lady.
"No, not true. The Pope has declared that Dogs have souls and other Christian faiths as well, follow that belief."
By this time, there was much conversation and mumbling in the long line up that had collected behind us. I could hear comments such as, "I don't want to go to heaven if there are no Dogs there" or "I know my Buddy is waiting at the Rainbow Bridge, waiting to walk into Heaven with me."
My comment, "Spell Dog backwards, it spells God because they carry the spark of God's unconditional love," and there was the comment, "Who gives a #&^@, I just want to get out of here and go home to cook dinner, so will you all just move it along?"
The dear old gal with the disbelieving heart about the sentience of dogs, helped me out to my truck with the bags of beautiful blankets and as I thanked her for her help, I said, "You know the most dangerous creature on the planet has 2 legs, not 4."
Her comment to my surprise was, "Thank you my dear, you have given me much to think about."
As I drove home, blankets piled high, I remember how, when we give each and every Dog a warm, fuzzy blanket, there is something special that happens. They know it is a gift of love and are so grateful, their eyes narrow, they snuggle all up in it and after a while we hear them take a deep breath, let out a sigh and we know they feel safe for the first time in a very long time.
